A Note From Coach Cristina:

Congratulations to each and every dancer who made the team. I am thrilled for this next season, and I can’t wait to show you what’s in store. Remember to keep up your dance training, so that you are ready to get down to business when the time comes. While there are certain things happening in our world that we can’t control, it is important to maximize on what we can. Keep stretching; keep reaching out to one another; and keep on being the empowered and adaptive women I know you to be.  Stay tuned for more announcements coming your way about fundraisers, summer dance challenges, and hopeful hangouts. Let’s get this season started off right!

RPA Love,

Coach Cristina

What Is Competition Team?

Competition Team will be an opportunity for those advanced levels students who really love to compete and want to be pushed further and work hard.  The group will be competing at three local dance competitions during the year.  We will also be going to a Nationals over the summer; because we don’t have all of the details for this nationals just yet, it will be encouraged but not mandatory.

The group is reserved for advanced dancers as students need to be dancing at a level that is ready to compete against other teams.  They will be working toward perfecting their technique and precision which is hard work.   We are planning for ONE competition team for grades 8-12; Cristina really wanted a BIG, POWERFUL team.  Rehearsals will be on Monday nights.  September-May and may be extended before competitions.

Cristina will be reviewing all the competition details at the end of the audition video.  If you have questions, you can email her at cgdancehero@gmail.com.

Rehearsals

SUMMER COMPETITION BOOT CAMP:

Company Summer Rehearsal: All competition members will begin the year with two weeks camp to get a head start on all of the material we need to learn.  This camp is mandatory!  Camp is August 24-September 4 (weekdays only) from 6:00-8:00.  Competition boot camp fee ($300) is not included in your competition fees.

YEAR LONG:

Regular weekly rehearsals will run from September-May.

All competition members will rehearse on Monday Nights for 2 hours.

We will  not have rehearsals during weeks when we do not have regular Rhythms classes.  We have budgeted for 30 rehearsals throughout the year so there will be some weeks without rehearsals.

Competition Calendar

  • Jan 29-31 - Starbound in Pacifica
  • March 5-7 - KAR in San Jose
  • April 16-18 -  Celebrity in San Rafael
  • July 7-12 - KAR Nationals in Anaheim

Competition Class is a YEAR LONG COMMITMENT.  The 10 month competition fee is non-refundable.  If a student cannot finish out the year, you still owe this monthly fee.  We highly, highly discourage anyone from quitting competition team.  It is very difficult on the group as a whole and teaches your child that they don’t need to fulfill the commitments they make.

Competition Fees

The competition team costs $95 per month and will be paid August-May (10 months).  It is more than last year because the dancers really wanted to compete more dances at more competitions.  This breaks down to about:

65% competition fees

25% coaching fees

10% costume fees

(Last year it was about 50% coaching fees so this time it is a lot more competition fees; but the kids begged to go another competition and to compete more numbers)

Your Competition Fees include:

  • weekly competition rehearsal fee
  • Two competitions with four competition dances, one with three
  • admin fees, and staff event expenses
  • Minor costume fees ($25 per costume; we are again trying to keep competition costumes inexpensive)

What your Competition Fees DO NOT INCLUDE:

  • Travel Fees for hotel nights at competitions (may or may not be necessary)
  • Summer Competition Boot Camp - $300 (required)
  • Solos, Duos, or Trios
  • Nationals

Fee Policies:

Competition is a YEAR LONG COMMITMENT.  If for some reason your child is unable to continue with company you will still owe your fees through May.

The 10 month competition fee is non-refundable.  If a student cannot finish out the year, you still owe this monthly fee.  We highly, highly discourage anyone from quitting competition.  It is very difficult on the group as a whole and teaches your child that they don’t need to fulfill the commitments they make.

Fundraisers

Coach Cristina has a number of ideas for fundraising that students will be allowed to participate in.  No fundraisers will be mandatory, but only those who participate will share in the money raised.  Families participating in any given fundraiser agree to participate 100%.  This includes prep time, set-up time, clean up and more. Funds from fundraisers will not go through Rhythms accounting in any way and must be handled separately.

Team Parents

We will be looking for parents to act as team parents.  These parents would be in charge of organizing food for some of the events, rides to competitions, and some special treats throughout the year.  If you are interested in being a Competition Team Parent, please email us to let us know.

Company Requirements and Expectations

  • Each competition student must be enrolled in either Company or two musicals during the school year.  See Company Info here!
  • Every competition dancer must enroll in at least 3 additional weekly classes at Rhythms; one class must be a ballet class.  (This class requirement does not include weekly company classes on Friday or weekly competition class on Monday).   You must be signed up for your classes by September 1.
  • Good attendance is a must.  If we feel that a student misses too many classes (especially ballet), there may be consequences.
  • All students are required to attend all competition classes and competitions (except Nationals).  It is imperative that the dancers attend EVERY competition.  We cannot re-stage if a student cannot attend.
  • Dancers must sign up for Competition Boot Camp.  Camp will run from 6-8pm from August 24-September 4 (Monday-Friday).  The cost of the camp is $300 and is not included in your monthly competition fees.  This camp will give us a big head start on all of their numbers, so much so that we will be able to compete more pieces than last year!
  • A zero tolerance policy is taken when it comes to drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes. Any Competition team members found using these substances, during a company trip or otherwise, will face severe consequences and removal from the Competition Team.
  • Competition team members are expected to be kind and considerate to every other student at Rhythms.  In company we are ALL friends regardless of which classes we take, how old we are, or what school we attend.
  • Students may be monitored on social media.  Anything that is not allowed inside Rhythms will also not be allowed on social media.  That means we do not say negative things about the studio or anyone at the studio online… even in a joking way.  Be respectful and kind even online.  You are also not allowed to post any photos or posts that are vulgar or dangerous in any way.  The coaches reserve the right to remove students from the company who we feel are not being appropriate online.
  • We believe that Competition Team members should be good role models for our other students and carry themselves in a respectful manner at all times.  They should be good representatives of Rhythms Performing Arts and represent our studio in a positive way.  This means that these students must participate 100% in all of their classes, be kind to fellow students, helpful to their teachers, and hardworking at all times.  Being a Company member is an honor and a privilege and should not be taken for granted.
