What Is Competition Team?

Competition Team will be an opportunity for those students who really love to dance and want to be pushed further and work hard.  The group will be competing at four local dance competitions during the year.  We will also be attending a dance convention for all those who are able.

For this upcoming year, we will likely have one big group that will be split up for the different numbers we compete.  This group will be for dancers entering grades 7-12.  For now, Kate will be coordinating the team, but we will have lots of guest choreographers for our dances.  Kate may or may not be the team coach for the whole year.

Who Can Audition for Competition

Must be entering grades 7-12 in September 2022

Auditions - Wednesday June 8 from 4:30-6:30

Wear jazz shoes and fitted dance attire.  Bring sneakers and half soles if you have them.

The team will be announced about 2 weeks after auditions.  However, Rhythms reserves the right to have additional team members added throughout the summer.

AUGUST BOOT CAMP: (Dates are still tentative but this is the plan)

$300 not included in competition fees (20 hours of rehearsal)

August 20 & 21, 2-5pm (Sat/Sun)

August 27 & 28, 2-5pm(Sat/Sun)

August 29-September 1, (weekdays, time possibly 5:30-7:30pm)

If you have conflicts during the listed times you must let us know at auditions.  You may not be allowed to be in numbers or may not make the team if you miss these rehearsals.

Regular weekly rehearsals will run from September-May.

They will likely be on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday nights for 1.5 hours per week.  If you have a time constraint on one of these days you must let us know at auditions.

We will not have rehearsals during weeks when we do not have regular Rhythms classes.  We have budgeted for 30 rehearsals throughout the year so there will be some weeks without rehearsals.

Competition Calendar

We will have the final calendar ready for you in August but we believe it will be something like this:

KAR Dance Convention: October 9 (Santa Clara)

ENCORE: March 17-19 (Burlingame)

CELEBRITY: April 14-16 (Santa Clara)

KAR: May 19-21 (San Jose)

We will be competing at 4 competitions and attending one convention.

Competition Team is a YEAR LONG COMMITMENT.  The 10 month competition fee is non-refundable.  If a student cannot finish out the year, you still owe this monthly fee.  We highly, highly discourage anyone from quitting competition team.  It is very difficult on the group as a whole and teaches your child that they don’t need to fulfill the commitments they make.

Competition Fees

The competition team costs $125 per month and will be paid August-May (10 months).  This is higher than last year to cover a 4th competition.  We run competition at no profit to studio.  We only charge you to cover the costs.

This breaks down to about:

75% competition fees (does not go to studio at all)

10% coaching fees

10% costume fees

5% team apparel

Your Competition Fees include:

  • weekly competition rehearsal fee
  • Four competitions with four competition dances for each dancer
  • Admin fees, and staff event expenses
  • Minor costume fees ($30 per costume; we are again trying to keep competition costumes inexpensive)
  • One item of Team Apparel

What your Competition Fees DO NOT INCLUDE:

  • Travel Fees for hotel nights at competitions (may or may not be necessary).
  • August Competition Boot Camp - $300 (required)
  • KAR Dance Convention - $175 (highly encouraged but not mandatory)
  • Solos, Duos, or Trios
  • Expenses for bonding activities throughout the year

Fee Policies:

Competition is a YEAR LONG COMMITMENT.  If for some reason your child is unable to continue with competition you will still owe your fees through May.

Team Parents

We will be looking for parents to act as team parents.  These parents would be in charge of organizing food for some of the events, rides to competitions, and some special treats throughout the year.  Team parents may also be in charge at some of the competitions.  It's likely that Kate will not be able to attend all of the competitions so the team parent would need to check in at the competition and monitor students backstage to make sure they are getting ready.  (It's easier than you think!)

If you are interested in being a Competition Team Parent, please email us to let us know.

Competition Team Requirements and Expectations

  • Every competition dancer must enroll in at least 4 hours of additional weekly dance classes at Rhythms; Or if you do a musical, you can take 2 weekly dance classes at Rhythms;  You must be signed up for your classes by August 15.  If we offer technique class, this will be one of your required classes.
  • Good attendance is a must.  If we feel that a student misses too many classes, there may be consequences.
  • All students are required to attend all competition classes and competitions.  It is imperative that the dancers attend EVERY competition.  We cannot re-stage if a student cannot attend.
  • Dancers must sign up for Competition Boot Camp.  See details above.
  • A zero tolerance policy is taken when it comes to drugs, alcohol, and cigarettes. Any Competition team members found using these substances, during a competition event or otherwise, will face severe consequences and removal from the Competition Team.
  • Competition team members are expected to be kind and considerate to every other student at Rhythms. We are ALL friends at Rhythms regardless of which classes we take, how old we are, or what school we attend.
  • Students may be monitored on social media.  Anything that is not allowed inside Rhythms will also not be allowed on social media.  That means we do not say negative things about the studio or anyone at the studio online… even in a joking way.  Be respectful and kind even online.  You are also not allowed to post any photos or posts that are vulgar or dangerous in any way.  The coaches reserve the right to remove students from the team who we feel are not being appropriate online.
  • We believe that Competition Team members should be good role models for our other students and carry themselves in a respectful manner at all times.  They should be good representatives of Rhythms Performing Arts and represent our studio in a positive way.  This means that these students must participate 100% in all of their classes, be kind to fellow students, helpful to their teachers, and hardworking at all times.  Being a competition team member is an honor and a privilege and should not be taken for granted.
